Switching from Abeka to BJU Press: where to start

Abeka has no placement test, so start from BJU's skills check

Abeka does not publish a placement test. It publishes scope and sequence lists that show the concepts and skills taught at each level [S3]. Those lists are handy for one thing: seeing what your student has already covered.

BJU Press has math skills assessments built around the skills its own math products teach [S4]. BJU says they "are not exact measures of a student's ability or potential" and are tools to help guide instruction, best used alongside parent or teacher observation [S4].

Neither publisher lines its levels up with the other's [S0]. Compare Abeka's list to what the BJU assessment shows, and let the assessment have the final word.

Steps

  1. Pull Abeka's scope and sequence for the level your student finished [S3].
  2. Take BJU Press's math skills assessment [S4].
  3. Where the two disagree, go with the assessment and your own read of your student.
