Memoria Press readiness assessments (Simply Classical); core placement is by phone

Memoria Press has no placement tests for its core curriculum and suggests choosing literature by reading level: if a book is too hard to read alone, back up a grade. A child starting First Grade should be fluent with short words like cat. Free readiness assessments exist for the Simply Classical line.

Memoria Press covers: phonics (early), literature, spelling, grammar, composition. IEW covers: writing (grammar sold separately as Fix It!).

How to make the switch

  1. Note the last IEW level your child worked in and whether they finished it.
  2. Find it in the table above and note the evidence level.
  3. Give the Memoria Press placement guidance on a calm day, without helping. Follow the publisher's instructions for scores near a cutoff.
  4. Compare the Memoria Press level's scope and sequence with what your child already covered.
  5. Use free samples or trial lessons for a week before buying the full level.
  6. Check the sale timing before you buy. When Memoria Press usually goes on sale. When IEW usually goes on sale.
