Abeka math placement guidance when leaving BJU Press

If you are moving from BJU Press math to Abeka, start with Abeka’s scope and sequence and its grade-placement guidance (PDF). Abeka’s guide explains how to compare completed learning with the work ahead. Use that comparison to review your child’s readiness before selecting new materials.

Abeka’s own comparison process for reviewing the next math book.

Abeka’s scope and sequence lists the concepts and skills taught in its materials. Its start guide describes a side-by-side review of scope and sequence documents, using learning objectives and contents lists to see what a child has learned.

If you want another view of the work your child is leaving, BJU Press’s math skills assessments cover skills taught in BJU Press math products. BJU Press says to use its assessments alongside parent or teacher observation. Use those assessments to review BJU Press skills while you consult Abeka’s own placement guidance.

Steps

  1. Gather the scope and sequence or learning objectives and contents for the BJU Press math work your child completed.
  2. Open Abeka’s scope and sequence for the work you are considering. Use Abeka’s guide to compare the concepts and skills side by side.
  3. Review what your child can do before choosing the Abeka materials. If the comparison leaves questions, resolve those with Abeka before ordering.

Questions parents ask

Is the scope and sequence an Abeka placement test?

The linked resource is a list of concepts and skills, not a test. Abeka’s start guide explains a comparison process for reviewing grade placement.

Does a BJU Press assessment tell me which Abeka book to buy?

BJU Press describes its math assessments as representing skills taught in its own products. Use Abeka’s own guidance when considering Abeka materials; this guide gives no cross-program score conversion.

Going from Abeka to BJU Press, curriculum switches in math and placement tests and level guides.
